It’s official — Taylor Swift has topped herself once again. While the Grammy-winning songstress is no stranger to setting (and breaking!) records, her most recent re-release of 2014’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) has officially become her most successful album debut to date.

After dropping the album on Oct. 27, it didn’t take long for Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) to skyrocket to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, becoming her 13th album to do so, according to Billboard. The record managed to sell 1.6 million units in the U.S. — and 3.5 million units worldwide — within its first week of sales, breaking the previous record she’d set for herself with the release of the original 1989 album back in 2014.

Taylor’s newest re-record also marks the biggest debut of any album based on unit sales since Adele’s 25 was released in 2015, Billboard notes, in addition to earning the sixth-largest sales week since Luminate first began electronically tracking music sales in 1991.

Taylor Swift Just Earned Billionaire Status

“I was born in 1989, reinvented for the first time in 2014, and a part of me was reclaimed in 2023 with the re-release of this album I love so dearly,” Taylor wrote on Instagram shortly after her new album’s release. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the magic you would sprinkle on my life for so long.”

She continued,  “This moment is a reflection of the woods we’ve wandered through and all this love between us still glowing in the darkest dark. I present to you, with gratitude and wild wonder, my version of 1989. It’s been waiting for you. Taylor.”

Swift originally announced the release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) during her last Los Angeles show of the Eras Tour back in August. Her latest drop comes months after she debuted Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) in July, which was preceded by the releases of Fearless and Red (Taylor’s Version)s in 2021.
