Billy Ray Cyrus and Australian singer Firerose face off in a whirlwind of cross-accusations amid their divorce,
Billy Ray Cyrus and his ex-partner Firerose, whose real name is Johanna Rose Hodges, are in the eye of the media storm due to a series of crossover accusations of abuse and manipulation in the midst of their divorce proceedings. Firerose, a 36-year-old Australian singer, claimed in a recent interview with the New York Post’s Page Six, published on June 30, that Cyrus subjected her to “systematic isolation” and imposed “strict rules” on her.
The relationship between Cyrus, 62, and Firerose began in 2021 during the recording of the song “New Day.” The collaboration between the two artists not only strengthened their professional bond, but also consolidated a personal relationship that led to marriage. The chemistry in the recording studio led them to spend more time together, developing a deep connection based on their mutual love of music.
Although the couple shared numerous moments in both their personal and professional lives, they recently announced their decision to separate through a joint statement. In that statement, they assured that it was an amicable breakup and asked for privacy during this period.
Firerose revealed in her interview with Page Six that, during their relationship, Cyrus subjected her to constant control, depriving her of having her own car and severely limiting her social outings. “I didn’t have a car. I was only allowed to go to the local chiropractor and once a month to get my nails done,” she said. In addition, she denounced that Cyrus isolated her loved ones from the farm they owned near Nashville, prohibiting them from visiting her and requiring her permission for any communication with them.
On the same day the interview was published on Page Six, Cyrus responded with an enigmatic message on Instagram, saying, “Happy Sunday everyone! I don’t think I’ve heard the word LIAR so many times on a Sunday morning. I am sure that the truth will soon be revealed.” So far, representatives for Billy Ray Cyrus have not commented on the allegations.
In his own divorce papers filed on June 17, the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer claimed that he had been the victim of a campaign of isolation by Firerose, who he claimed prevented him from communicating with one of his daughters. “While the plaintiff acknowledges that he was indeed vocal, frustrated, and angry with the defendant in May 2024, it is the plaintiff who, in fact, has been abused,” the June 24 document states. “Not only verbally and emotionally by the defendant, but also physically.”
During the interview with Page Six, Firerose detailed the abuses mentioned in her June 14 complaint, stating that Cyrus subjected her to continuous yelling and humiliation. “He would scream and call me ‘stupid stupid crazy slut,'” she said. “It was illogical, insane and terrifying.” She also alleged that Cyrus applied punishments such as the “silent treatment”, ignoring her for days. “I retired… I was afraid to speak,” Firerose said.
The context of the allegations is further complicated by Firerose’s statements about her sobriety and how she expects her ex-husband to use the events of those “very dark years” against her. “I think he’ll use everything against me,” he said. And he added: “He is an evil man.”
Firerose and Cyrus tied the knot in October 2023. Since the start of the divorce proceedings, both sides have come forward with serious allegations of abuse, turning their story into a high-profile media case.
