In an eager attempt to see Lionel Messi in action, fans in Hong Kong went as far as climbing a mountain, only to be let down when the iconic Argentine had to remain on the bench.

Lionel Messi, part of Inter Miami, was in Hong Kong for their pre-season tour, flying in on a jet. Unfortunately, after sustaining a muscle injury, Messi could only participate for 7 minutes in a friendly against Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, a match that did not feature his long-time competitor Cristiano Ronaldo.

Supporters in Hong Kong had been hopeful to witness the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner play against the Hong Kong Stars on February 4. Nonetheless, Messi did not make an appearance on the field, sitting out the game alongside Luis Suarez as Inter Miami secured a 4-1 victory.

The disappointment was palpable among those in the stadium who had paid a premium for their tickets, expecting to see Messi play. The frustration was even greater for those outside the stadium, particularly some fans who had climbed a nearby mountain in hopes of witnessing one of football’s greatest talents.

Inter Miami is set to continue their Asian tour with a match against Japan’s Vissel Kobe, followed by a game against Newell’s Old Boys back in the United States, marking the start of their 2024 MLS season on February 21.

The pre-season has been far from promising for Inter Miami, with the team losing four of their last five matches. The club’s defensive weaknesses are evident, indicating that significant improvements are necessary if they aim to contend for the championship in the upcoming season.
